Coffee and athletic performance
Coffee before a workout remains one of the simplest rituals for starting a session right. Sports science research consistently links caffeine to better endurance, reduced perceived fatigue, and sharper focus during effort. It's not a miracle supplement, just a well-documented boost used by athletes at every level, from a morning run to a Sunday bike ride.
The most commonly cited guidelines suggest a dose of roughly 3 to 6 mg of caffeine per kilogram of body weight, taken 30 to 60 minutes before exercise. These are general reference points, not an individual prescription, everybody responds to caffeine a little differently.
A few things that come up often among athletes who work coffee into their routine:
- Lower perceived exertion at the same intensity
- Improved reaction time and alertness early in a session
- An effect that typically lasts 3 to 5 hours depending on personal sensitivity
- Better results when caffeine is paired with good hydration
